What started in 1919 as a postwar socialist-centered school of art in Weimar, Germany, focused on imaginary Expressionist design, was forced by the realities of the German economy in the mid-1920s (hyperinflation hit August-September 1923) to shift to the minimalist aesthetic for which it is now known. The rise of Hitler's Nazism in the late 1920s forced the school to retrench and eventually close in 1933. I will place the history of the school within the context of post-WWI Europe.
