Course Title: (HIS13326) OPERATION MARKET GARDEN

Operation "Market-Garden" was a bold attempt by the Allies in September 1944 to "jump the Rhine River" at Arnhem, Holland by aerial invasion using the British 1st Parachute Division, the American 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions, and a brigade of Polish paratroopers. British 21st Army Group commander Field Marshal Montgomery developed the plan, and General Eisenhower approved it, to the disgust of American Generals Bradley and Patton. Success depended on the paratroopers seizing and holding ten bridges between the Belgian border and Arnhem, followed by a drive across the Dutch countryside by the British XXX Corps. The plan collapsed under the weight of over ambitious objectives and a relentless German response. The operation has been hotly debated since WW2, largely ignored by the commander's post war memoirs, but firmly seared in the memories of the brave men and even Dutch citizens who suffered so terribly during the battle. This talk will take you to the battlefield with many "then and now" photos.
