Course Title: (LEG204) HEIRS PROPERTY IN BEAUFORT COUNTY

During the Civil War, Union troops occupied Hilton Head and Beaufort. After the Emancipation Proclamation, the government sold abandoned plantation lands to former slaves. Unfamiliar with wills and estate probate, their descendants inherited land informally. This led to many parcels in Beaufort and Jasper counties being classified as "heirs property.
