Course Title: (CINT10026) SERVING THE LOWCOUNTRY 165 YEARS OF THE PENN EXPERIMENT
For over 150 years, the Penn Center National Historic Landmark District on St. Helena Island, South Carolina, has stood as a symbol of African American resilience and achievement. It continues to inspire pride and belonging among the Gullah Geechee people-descendants of formerly enslaved West and Central Africans in the Sea Islands. This presentation highlights the Center's rich history and its ongoing programs and community impact today. The Gullah Geechee represent a tangible outcome of the Port Royal Experiment, a Civil War-era plan to tutor freed people out of slavery and into freedom-a "rehearsal for Reconstruction," as historians have called it. This connection underscores how early efforts in education and emancipation directly influenced the development of Gullah Geechee culture and community resilience.
