T&L 2900: MC: History and Healing: From Assimilation to Reclamation at Fort Totten Boarding School

"History and Healing: From Assimilation to Reclamation at Fort Totten Boarding School" will take place at Fort Totten State Historic Site, which served as a Native American Boarding School run by the federal government between 1891 and 1939. The workshop will take place at the historic sites with trips around the Spirit Lake Nation and Fort Totten Days Powwow. Our goal is to tell the history of the boarding school era, specifically through Fort Totten Boarding School and help educators understand how tribal nations, today, are working to revive their communities and culture that the boarding schools tried to strip away.

The workshop will address NDNAEU, tell the history of the boarding school era in North Dakota, and help educators understand how tribal nations are working to revive their communities and culture that the boarding schools tried to eliminate.

Learning Objectives/Expected Outcomes:
  • Prepare teachers for North Dakota's Native American Essential Understandings (NDNAEU).
  • Teachers will understand the history and impact of boarding schools on Native American Nations, especially those in North Dakota.
  • Teachers will learn about cultural traditions that still exist and new innovations based on cultural traditions, practices and beliefs.
