Essentials of Death Investigation is a free, on-demand course ideal for professionals in forensic science, law enforcement, and legal fields.
This course will provide a foundational understanding of death investigation procedures. You will learn about the role of the medical examiner and the process for submitting both decedents and associated evidence. The course will also cover best practices for securing a scene, handling evidence, and maintaining the chain of custody. Additionally, you will explore the types of evidence used to determine time, cause, and manner of death.

- Purpose of and commonterms around death investigation.
- Best practices in the collection of evidence during a death investigation.
- Identify specialists, other than the medical examiner, who may be required for completion of a postmortem examination.
- Associate types ofevidence with time, cause, and manner of death.
