Substance Use Disorders within the Maternal Population: Implementation of the SBIRT Model

Welcome to Substance Use Disorders within the Maternal Population course, where we will take a look at screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment (SBIRT). SBIRT is an evidenced-based public health approach used to identify and prevent risky alcohol use, depression, illicit drug use, and nicotine use. One of the key benefits of SBIRT is to intervene early with people who have at-risk behaviors before the onset of dependence. This course will explore the importance of universal SBIRT screening for pregnant persons and those who may become pregnant. SBIRT uses validated screening tools to identify risky substance use and gathers further information to determine the level of intervention needed. The goal is to identify risky behavior patterns early so that intervention can occur in a timely, supportive manner. SBIRT screening may also identify individuals with co-occurring disorders, as well as individuals at risk of developing co-occurring disorders.SBIRT can be used in a variety of settings including health care centers, community health, hospitals, and primary and OB/GYN offices. Once you have completed this training, you will be equipped with the tools and techniques to implement SBIRT in your practice. Participants will be provided with detailed skills of brief interventions and the process of making appropriate referrals to treatment.SBIRT is an effective model for pregnant and postpartum persons at risk of SUD. Pregnancy offers a unique time to screen, intervene, and engage to promote healthier families. Pregnant persons are often motivated to stop using substances during the perinatal period. This course will empower you to make a difference in the lives of pregnant persons and babies. Participants will learn about universal screening to identify risky drug and alcohol use, domestic violence, depression, and tobacco use in maternal populations. Focusing on the rationale and consequences of untreated SUDs for pregnant persons will increase awareness of infant mortality in Alabama.
