Course Detail: Climate Change & Health Symposium: A Roadmap for Grassroots Advocacy

**Registration is closed**

Date & Time
Saturday, April 9, 2022
8:30 am - 12:30 pm EDT

Format
100% Virtual on Zoom

Overview
Climate change is a growing public health concern with implications for safety and well-being; nutrition and food security; food, water, and vector-borne diseases; and mental health. Climate change and the social determinants of health are closely aligned, contributing to disparate environmental exposures and health inequalities, as a disproportionate number of low-income individuals, some communities of color, and those with higher vulnerability to disease and chronic health conditions are at risk.

Join national experts and faculty from the MGH Institute of Health Professions School of Nursing Center for Climate Change, Climate Justice and Health as we build a roadmap for grassroots advocacy that participants can use to advocate for and drive change.

Read the 2021 Lancet Countdown U.S. Brief which is supported by a diverse group of health experts from over 70 institutions, organizations, and centers who recognize that climate change is first and foremost a health crisis.

Learning Outcomes
  • Examine the 21st century impacts of climate change and associated negative health consequences.
  • Discuss federal and regional legislation to curb planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions and the impact of climate injustice on communities.
  • Explore policy and advocacy initiatives for local and global grassroots climate action.

Who Should Attend
  • All those who are interested in learning more about the impact that climate change has on health.
  • Health professionals who aim to identify and reduce the risks and consequences of climate change.
  • Those interested in engaging in policy and advocacy efforts related to climate change and health.
Keynote Speaker

Bill McKibben
Founder and Senior Adviser Emeritus, 350.org

Bill McKibben is founder and senior adviser emeritus of 350.org. His 1989 book The End of Nature is regarded as the first book for a general audience about climate change, and has appeared in 24 languages. He's gone on to write many more books, and his work appears regularly in periodicals from the New Yorker to Rolling Stone. He serves as the Schumann Distinguished Scholar in Environmental Studies at Middlebury College, as a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and he has won the Gandhi Peace Prize as well as honorary degrees from 19 colleges and universities. He was awarded the Right Livelihood Award, sometimes called the alternative Nobel, in the Swedish Parliament. Foreign Policy named him to its inaugural list of the world's 100 most important global thinkers.

McKibben helped found 350.org, the first global grassroots climate campaign, and has organized on every continent, including Antarctica, for climate action. He played a leading role in launching the opposition to big oil pipeline projects, and the fossil fuel divestment campaign, which has become the biggest anti-corporate campaign in history, with endowments worth more than $15 trillion stepping back from oil, gas and coal. He lives in the mountains above Lake Champlain with his wife, the writer Sue Halpern, where he spends as much time as possible outdoors. In 2014, biologists credited his career by naming a new species of woodland gnat-Megophthalmidia mckibbeni-in his honor.
