Course Detail: Kid's Aquaponics Camp
Can you grow floating food with fish poop? We do! This 3-day aquaponics program at the Sustainable Aquaponics Research Center (SARC) is designed to provide kids 11-14 with a dynamic, hands-on introduction to aquaponics as a sustainable farming method. Through interactive activities and direct engagement with SARC's facilities and experts, students will explore the ecological principles that integrate fish, plants, and microbes into one coherent, linked system. The program emphasizes scientific inquiry, engineering design, and environmental stewardship, aligning with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), NOAA's Environmental Literacy Program, and the National Center for Agricultural Literacy Outcomes. This camp can accommodate up to 20 students and will take place on the Armstrong Campus of Georgia Southern University in the Science Center and the SARC greenhouse facility. Each student should bring their own lunch and a refillable drink bottle. All educational materials will be provided, and each student will take home a small "Jarquaponics" system. Students should wear appropriate clothing and shoes for walking on gravel and being outdoors in a greenhouse.
