Course Detail: AVE-3000 - Aviation English for Air Traffic Control

Overview

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's Aviation English for Air Traffic Control is a comprehensive instructor-facilitated online course designed to improve controllers' English language proficiency. Course developers and instructors have Master's degrees in Applied Linguistics or Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL), and have completed training to ensure they have some familiarity with aviation operations. This course was developed in collaboration with aviation Subject Matter Experts (SMEs).

The course adheres to:

  • Guidelines for Aviation English Training Programmes
    (ICAO Circular 323)
  • Manual on the Implementation of ICAO Language Proficiency Requirements
    (ICAO Document 9835)

In Aviation English for Air Traffic Control, students interact with content that is relevant to their jobs as controllers and that supports language learning goals. During the course, students' assignments are graded by an Aviation English instructor who provides targeted, personalized feedback. The instructor is available as a resource throughout the course.

What You Will Learn

All modules address the ICAO skills of comprehension, fluency, vocabulary, structure, and pronunciation, and include activities that improve reading proficiency. All course material is relevant to air traffic controllers' work, and students emerge from the course with more awareness of current, job-relevant aviation topics.
Course options are available that pair students with proficient English speakers, to practice conversation and improve interaction and fluency skills.

Course Information

This course is a 100% online and asynchronous. Coursework is web-based with no additional software required, although a reliable internet connection is recommended.

The course is organized into 24 modules:

  • 16 content and language modules
  • 4 content and language review modules; and
  • 4 modules focusing on radiotelephony skills.

Together, these modules total 200 hours of learner time; however, the course can be customized as individual modules or combinations of modules, to meet the needs of students.
