Strengthen your leadership skills and build a more effective workplace with this practical, hands-on professional development series from the Central Oregon Community College Center for Business. Designed for supervisors, managers, business owners, and aspiring leaders in Crook County, this program focuses on the real-world skills needed to lead people, improve customer relationships, and build strong teams. Offered through the COCC Prineville Campus, the series consists of one class per month over three months. Participants may complete the entire series as a comprehensive leadership program or enroll in individual classes based on their professional development needs. Recruiting good employees can be challenging in the best of times. Since the pandemic of 2020-2021, many businesses have struggled to find interested and capable employees with the potential for growth who will commit longer-term (e.g. a year or more). Ten to hundreds of hours can be spent building recruitment systems, completing outreach, soliciting applications and resumes, conducting interviews, checking references, following up and communicating with applicants, and making selections. Once hired, even more hours and costs are invested including training and orientation. To hire employees who are retained less than a year, is hard on some industries. Hiring employees with great potential who want to stay and learn a business is the focus of this course along with retention and creating an highly desirable work environment.

For the first time in history, five generations are present in the workplace, Traditionalists, Baby Boomers, Generation Xers, Millennials and Generation Z. In a few short years Generation Alpha will also be entering the workforce. This means that, in general, there are at least five different cultures mixing and interacting in any one organization, office, meeting, etc. What does this mean for leaders and supervisors? With so many different generations interacting, conflict and communication challenges are likely. This seminar will provide an overview of the different generations currently in the workplace, layout strategies for successful leadership and team facilitation, and break down stereotypes that can inhibit successful communication.

Even well-designed change initiatives can struggle when leaders don't understand how people experience change internally. This applied leadership lab helps participants understand the emotional, cognitive, and behavioral dynamics that shape how individuals and teams respond to change-and what leaders can do to guide transitions more effectively.Participants will explore key energy states (catabolic and anabolic), fixed versus growth mindsets, and how these influence motivation, resistance, and engagement during change initiatives. Using the SCARF Model and the William Bridges Transition Model, the lab provides practical tools for recognizing common change responses, strengthening psychological safety, and supporting teams through uncertainty. Interactive exercises focus on translating insight into workplace-ready strategies participants can apply immediately.

They're about the deeply ingrained patterns that can limit visibility, voice, and influence at work: people-pleasing, perfectionism, over-explaining, and holding back in rooms where they fully belong. This workshop invites participants to examine the unwritten rules they have been following and begin the work of rewriting them. Attendees leave with greater self-awareness, practical strategies, and the confidence to lead on their own terms.
