Course Detail: W-IND-MANU-MILL - Mill Basics

This foundational course is intended for individuals with no prior experience in milling operations. The class will provide comprehensive hands-on training in the basic skills and techniques needed to operate a manual mill, with a gradual introduction to the basics of CNC mill operation. By the end of the course, students will have a solid understanding of milling principles, enabling them to perform essential tasks and prepare for more advanced machining courses. This course focuses on manufacturing metal materials.  

Learning Outcomes - 

At the end of this course, participants will understand: 

  1. 1. Safety and Operation: Understanding safety protocols, and how to safely load/unload parts.   

  1. 2. Mill Anatomy & Controls: Learning the names and functions of Mill components.  

  1. 3. Fundamental Operations: Understanding work holding, cutting tools, and more. 

  1. 4. Advanced Operations: Reaming and Boring, Taper Turning, and Threading. 

  1. 5. Practical Application: Performing optimal speeds and feeds and other project work.  

 

Certification  

Students will leave the course with a Certificate of Completion from the College of Eastern Idaho WTCE. This course is for Professional Development and/or Personal Enrichment.

  • Beginner Hobbyists: Adults interested in DIY projects or want to learn metal working as a hobby. 
  • Entry-Level Manufacturing Workers: New hires or trainees in the Manufacturing, Fabrication, or Machine shops. 
  • High School or Trade School Students: Students that have found interest in Stem Programs, shop classes and vocational training. 
  • Engineering Students: College students studying mechanical engineering, manufacturing, and Industrial Technology.

Requirements - 

PPE Required 

  • Safety Glasses - We will not let you operate machines in the shop if you do not have safety glasses. 
  • Closed-Toe Shoes - Work boots are preferred.  
  • Long Pants and shirts without loose or baggy sleeves. 
  • Hair tied back, if applicable 
  • Absolutely no jewelry or baggy clothes are allowed.
