Course Detail: C_VETERANCENTRIC - Veteran Centric Means Matters and Firearms Safety for Mental Health Professional

In an effort to help address culturally competent mental health services for veterans, Maine's veteran suicide rate (highest in the Northeast for the past three years), and to meet an unmet training need for counselors throughout the State of Maine, a Veteran-Centric Means Matters and Firearms Safety Training for Mental Health Professionals was created by the Maine Safer Homes Taskforce (Maine Bureau of Veterans' Services, VA Maine Health Care, VA Vet Centers, Veterans of Foreign Wars Maine, the Sportsman's Alliance of Maine, and the Maine Center for Disease Control) in partnership with the Maine Army National Guard Behavioral Health Program. This presentation will be offered during September's Suicide Prevention Month and it is our hope that this will become a yearly training offered by the taskforce.

Goals and objectives of the program:

The purpose of the program is for counselors to:

?       Interact directly with veterans to better understand military culture and why firearms play

        an important role to them.

?       To gain veterans' perspectives regarding what they are looking for in mental health

services (what works and what doesn't) and best practices for engagement. To provide

an opportunity for peer-to-peer mentoring and role playing with veterans. To help address

the warning sides of suicide, why means matters, and cultural stigma associated with

        suicide attempts and completion.

?       To discuss the importance of veteran safety plans and their family, friends, and other

         veterans' role in them.

?       To provide firearms safety training with certified professionals.

?       To provide mental health professionals with both NRA and CEU certificates for the event.
