How shall we view photos of the Great Depression: as art, documentary or Nazi propaganda? Maybe all. Economist and photographer Roy Stryker headed the Farm Security Administration as part of FDR's New Deal. He brought attention to rural poverty in America by hiring many photographers who subsequently went on to successful commercial careers. The Depression also gave us other art forms: poetry, plays, novels. You will see photos of beautiful landscapes and attractive portraits in addition to the Dust Bowl works.
