Course Goal: Assess and address the ways we deliberate and generate decisions without simply seeking a yes or a compromise!

Consideration: Negotiation effectiveness is about improving leadership. Regardless of how much you know about negotiation already, reconsidering negotiation approaches, and being willing to shift the approaches will raise the level of your game! When you think of negotiations, you may think of compromise. The idea of negotiations may even make you cringe. There is a way, or many ways, to collaborate and get to a solution without splitting the difference, and without giving up or giving in. Competitiveness, ego and misguided approaches can keep us from being confident, effective, professional, and fair when a negotiation situation is upon us. Instead of bullying, running, or acquiescing, wouldn't it be nice to know you can stand tall, get things done, and not have a winner and loser in a negotiation? It can happen when the basic ideas behind negotiation guide people into communication and outcomes that work.

Course Overview: This course is intentionally designed to allow for us to explore what aspects/factors that make us either effective or ineffective negotiators. What fears do we face. Are we avoiders or attackers, and is either a valid approach? Throughout the session(s), attendees will learn to share their styles, questions, and counter responses while participating in real-time role play where expectations are set on each side of the table. The session(s) demonstrate how everything from timing to tone, attitude to the ask, impact the outcome, and therefore, the success of negotiations. Direct feedback, and constructive coaching are practiced during the session(s) in order to ensure the learnings are readily transferrable to both personal and work-related environments. Participants will likely want to tackle an upcoming challenge fairly quickly after in order to incorporate all the elements of the session. People who participate in the course will exit the session armed with formulas for strategy and implementation for things like budgeting to securing contracts and commitments.

Post-session Skills Gained:

  • Presenting asks and expectations confidently and soundly
  • Engaging opposition for collaboration
  • Communicating goals and outcomes in terms of measurable results
  • Getting to a decision without splitting the difference

This Capstone Course is an independent study course based on action research using the five program courses completed as a foundation. The research should describe competencies, use reference tools and theories acquired in the program, and apply best practices and analytics in an effort to address and solve the identified organizational issue.

Persuasive Business Case Writing asks students to build on their experiences writing and evaluating proposals for the workplace. We focus on clarity and concision, anticipating the information needs of various readers, and creating visual elements that are both informative and persuasive. These sessions incorporate group discussion, short writing activities, and small-group critique in an intensive two-day, workshop-style seminar that provides students with an opportunity to polish their proposal-writing skills, bringing together insights and best practices from a variety of industries.

Course Goal: Review, incorporate, and practice the approaches to presenting self and business...ideas and offerings while incorporating options for conveying expertise, offering guidance, addressing questions and including others in options...professionally, purposefully, and with powerful impact!

Consideration: What are the key elements to presenting effectively? How do you show your knowledge and application powerfully when with others? Sure, some people are "natural presenters", but each of us, no matter how good we are, can use some tips, tools and polishing before presenting to 2 or 2,000+ people. When some people speak or present, we sit on the edge of our seats, and when others do the same, we get in a few winks, so is it just the topic that matters? Absolutely not! Sure, the topic will naturally be of greater interest to some than others, but a powerful presenter will capture the audience with style, wit, props and stories?whether the topic is new or something people have heard about for years! How is it done? The presenter has to have a passion for what is on topic, and that is either instinctive, or found in researching an angle that is different that the norm. When are questions allowed? How does one start and end a presentation to make an impact? With elements of a presentation combining into structure, format, humor (to?or not to?), as well as handling Questions and Answer segments, this has become a session filled with a-ha moments, true changes in implementation, and laughter regarding what works, when it works, how it works, and if we dare "go there" in a presentation for informing, entertaining, and/or "pitching".

Course Overview: A course on Presenting Powerfully for Engagement and Impact is specifically designed to allow for us to explore what aspects/factors make up memorable, high-impact presentations, know how to convey expertise while including the audience on a pleasant journey, and exercise timing and pacing for professionally delivering messaging to accomplish a goal. Throughout the session(s), attendees will learn to share their 30 second pitch, answer the "What do you do?" questions, and develop presentation that are complementary to their style of delivering a message. The session(s) reveal how everything from planning to practice to delivery matters in the way each engagement, and therefore the person, is perceived. Direct feedback, and constructive coaching are practiced during the session(s) in order to ensure the learnings are readily transferable to both business and social environments. Participants will likely want to tackle an upcoming presentation fairly soon after in order to incorporate all the elements of the session. People who participate in the Presenting Powerfully session(s) will exit the session armed with formulas for high impact presentations...for all types of impact/outcomes.

Post-session Skills Gained:

  • Presenting confidently, clearly and with engagement
  • Engaging audiences of 1+ with purpose, passion and empowerment
  • Communicating goals and message for audience benefits

Presenting is a part of Facilitation/ Training, and HOW someone conducts training matters!

Course Goal: To provide new and existing Trainer and Facilitators approaches, expressions and actions for engaging audience members and making training effective and fun.

Consideration: Too frequently, because someone is good at something, we make him or her the Trainer. Similarly, when someone is not afraid to speak publicly, we deem that person a Presenter or Facilitator. Still, Trainers and Presenters/Facilitators are so much more than expertise and fearless speaking! Training, when done well, is the engagement of the audience and exchange of knowledge and information in a way that is inviting, interactive, and lasting. When subject matter experts and those who like to work with people apply tips and proven approaches to their effort, their confidence, and therefore, their training effectiveness rise. As a result of increased training energy, audience members report increased satisfaction and interest in training offerings.

Course Overview: A Train-the-Trainer course focuses on both the Trainer and the attendees of training sessions. This course allows attendees to increase and utilize a practical, how-to overview of the entire training function within an organization. Training delivery includes what is referred to as "The 3Ps of Training": Planning & Preparation, Presenting Information/Materials, Performance & Feedback. • Planning & Preparation
  • Presenting Information/Materials
  • Performance & Feedback
