National Center on Forensics: Oral Fluid Testing in DUID Investigations

Law enforcement officers face the challenge of ensuring the safety of motorists, particularly when dealing with drivers who are under the influence of drugs that cannot be detected through a breathalyzer test. To address this issue, new roadside screening instruments have been developed to identify these drugs in oral fluid samples. Certified officers can now use these instruments, similar to how a breathalyzer is employed to detect alcohol in breath. This course provides an overview of two such roadside instruments for testing oral fluid and outlines a procedure for collecting additional oral fluid samples, which can be sent to a lab for confirmation testing. By completing this course, officers will be fully prepared to take a certification exam, enabling them to carry out these tests and sample collections effectively. The course includes lectures and video demonstrations illustrating the proper use of these instruments and collection devices.

Course Level Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the differences between using oral fluid for roadside screening and using oral fluid for evidentiary testing.
  • List the screening devices used for roadside screening tests of oral fluids and collection devices used for evidentiary collection of oral fluid.
  • Describe your state statues that allow for the use of oral fluid for roadside screening or evidentiary testing.
  • Describe the process for collecting and testing a sample for the purpose of roadside screening using an Abbott SoToxa? Mobile Test System or Draeger DT5000.
  • Describe the process for collecting oral fluid using Quantisal? Oral Fluid Collection Device.
  • Describe the process for submitting an evidentiary sample to the lab.
