Biography: John Harold Merrill is the Director of Community Relations and Community Education for the Tuscaloosa County Board of Education. Prior to his joining the county schools he served as a National Account Executive and Manager at Randall Publishing Company (1988-90), as the Assistant Director of the Tuscaloosa County Industrial Development Authority (1990-93), and as the Director of Business Development for the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama (1993-94). Some of John's community activities include being a graduate of Leadership Tuscaloosa (89-90), founder of Forerunners (1992-93), serving as President of the Leadership Tuscaloosa Alumni Association, United Cerebral Palsy of West Alabama, Druid Civitan Club (two terms), and Tuscaloosa City School's Vocational Advisory Council, Greater Tuscaloosa Youth for Christ, and the West Alabama Chapter of the American Red Cross. He has also been active with the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, United Way of West Alabama, Northport Citizenship League, Hillcrest High School Athletic Booster's Club, Boy Scouts of America - Black Warrior Council, Girl Scouts of America - Tombigbee Council, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, Theater Tuscaloosa, YMCA, Taylorville Little League, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, March of Dimes, West Alabama Chapter of the Public Relations Council of Alabama, PRIDE, U.S. 82 Corridor Project, West Alabama Festival with Franklin Graham, National Day of Prayer, Tuscaloosa Tip-Off Club, Challenge 21 Strategic Planning committee, Mercedes-Benz Relocation Team and others. He is an elected member of the Tuscaloosa County Democratic Executive Committee and the Alabama Democratic Executive Committee . In 1998 and 2000 he served as a political analyst for Tuscaloosa's WJRD TV 7 election coverage. Professionally, he is President of the Alabama Community Education Association (ACEA), and is President of the Alabama School Communicators Association (ASCA). John graduated from The University of Alabama where he was active in the Student Government Association (SGA), having served as a student senator, as Vice-President, and as President (1986-87). While at the University, John was very involved in Residential Life, served on nine University Standing Committees, was in the Anderson Society, was awarded the William P. Bloom Scholarship, and served two Congressional Internships in Washington, D.C. (1983-84).

Biography: Dr. Adam Sharples Brooks is a nationally renowned public speaker with a Ph.D. in communication and information sciences, an M.A. in communication studies, and a background in public relations. His research focuses on rhetoric in the areas or diversity, identity, and cultural studies. As the current assistant director of the Public Speaking Program at The University of Alabama, Brooks oversees the Speaking Studio with a mission to help clients clarify and craft effective messages, cultivate dynamic delivery, and calm public speaking anxiety. Over the course of his career, Brooks has coached numerous public speakers to national acclaim and is an expert in the areas of diversity and communication, public speaking delivery, popular culture, and mass communication.

Biography: Ken Smith was born in Union Springs, Alabama, March 1, 1960. He received a B.S. degree in journalism from the University of Alabama in 1982 and a J.D. (law) degree from the University of Alabama School of Law in 1985. He presently serves as Deputy Director of the Alabama League of Municipalities and has been the Chief Counsel for the League Since June of 1986. Prior to working for the League of Municipalities, he served a one-year clerkship to Justice Hugh Maddox of the Alabama Supreme Court. During his years with the League of Municipalities, he has been responsible for advising municipal officials and employees from over 400 member cities and towns. He has written numerous articles on municipal government and addressed numerous gatherings of municipal officials and attorneys on municipal matters. He has helped write the handbook and guides used by all elected municipal officials in Alabama. He has also assisted League lobbyists in their efforts. During this period, many laws benefiting municipalities have been acted by the State legislature. He has also served as liaison between the League and other interest groups on matters affecting municipal government. He is married to the former Brenda Deneise Flowers of Elba, Alabama. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Alabama State Bar, and the Montgomery County Bar Association. He is active in the International Municipal Lawyers Association (IMLA), serving on the IMLA Board of Directors, Chair of the IMLA Personnel Section, and is also on the Model Licensing Agreement Committee for IMLA. He has previously served as Chair to the IMLA State League Attorneys Department. He also serves on the Advisory Committee on Municipal Courts, the County and Municipal Liaison Committee, and has been a member of the Statewide Task for Domestic Violence Training.
