Having led two different 2-week-long SVSU Nursing Study Abroad trips to Northern Tanzania in May 2023 and May 2025 (and having spent 10 weeks in Zanzibar in 2019), Dr. Kelch will provide an overview of the health care systems, health issues, cultural and lifestyle factors, and nutrition affecting population health in East Africa. Photographic visits to hospitals, clinics, and nursing schools will be reviewed. There aremany similarities, yet stark differences, when comparing Tanzania versus Michigan. Issues that Western tourists might experience while visitingEast Africa will be covered, including travel safety recommendations. This will be an informative, photo-filled presentation.
