Course Detail: W23PL-HHS-04P - The Ethics of Field Supervision: Dilemmas and Solutions

FREE to all SVSU BSW/MSW Field Instructors, Task Supervisors, Faculty Liaisons, Clinical Instructors, and Faculty/Staff

Graduates of Michigan schools of social work face mounting pressures to practice ethically in an age of a changing social media landscape, new and complex technology, and blurred role boundaries. Field placement supervisors are challenged to not only teach ethical principles to their students, but model them in their supervision practices. This interactive course will take a deep dive into three supervision roles/tasks that have the potential to incur ethical dilemmas and/or violations. Specifically, participants will hone their understanding of diversity competence, dual relationships, and scope of practice as they relate to their work as field supervisors. Small-group work will allow participants to brainstorm potential solutions to the dilemmas associated with these principles.

Training Objectives:
1.  Participants will become better informed about the challenges of navigating three (3) ethical concerns related to supervising field students.
2. Participants will identify risk management strategies that address these ethical concerns.
3.  Participants will assess their supervision skills in relation to mitigating ethical dilemmas and violations.
