Course Detail: W23PL-HHS-01P - Basic Cardiac Monitoring in Healthcare

This course is designed for individuals needing dysrhythmia interpretation. These individuals may include EKG Techs, Tele-Monitoring Technicians, RNs, or health care students.

Program Summary

This program will be delivered in four sessions. Sessions will be face to face classes that last 4 hours each. Weekly homework should be expected. Time will be provided during each class to practice rhythm strips and review homework from the prior week.

  • Week 1 - Electrophysiology of the heart, normal ECG, Sinus node arrhythmias, atrial dysrhythmias
  • Week 2 - Junctional dysrhythmia, Heart Blocks
  • Week 3 - Ventricular dysrhythmias, cardiac pacing (basic)
  • Week 4 - Review of cardiac arrest procedures, defibrillation/cardioversion; Final Exam
Program Objectives
  • Discuss the conduction system and electrophysiological properties of the heart
  • Distinguish abnormal cardiac conduction
  • Analyze the ECG and determine the criteria necessary to identify selected dysrhythmias originating in the SA node, the atria, and AV junctional area, and the ventricles.
  • Describe the signs and symptoms and EKG changes associated with the patient with an acute myocardial infarction may exhibit when selected dysrhythmias occur.
  • Explain the nursing actions/medical treatment and rationales for each dysrhythmia discussed.
  • Recognize when cardiac pacing, cardioversion and defibrillation are needed methods of treatment for selected dysrhythmias

Participants are to bring the following materials to class:
  • Calipers & rulers - will be provided
  • Book:  Jane Huff - ECG Workout:  Exercises in Arrhythmia Interpretation (Available to be purchased on Amazon)
Nursing Continuing Education
One (1) contact hour for approximately every 60 minutes of class time will be awarded to participants who complete the following criteria (total course=16):
  • Attend all sessions
  • Pass the exam with a score of 84%
