Course Detail: Core Concepts in Complex Care

Home-based complex care nursing is a highly specialized field that plays a critical role in supporting people with complex medical conditions and their families across the lifespan. Yet severe workforce shortages and limited specialty training opportunities continue to impact access to safe, high-quality care. Delayed hospital discharges, unmet home nursing hours, caregiver strain, and preventable health crises are increasingly common when qualified home-based nurses are unavailable.

Most nurses in the United States are educated within hospital-centered nursing curricula, resulting in limited exposure to home-based practice, reduced confidence in managing complex care in community settings, and an under-recognition of home nursing as a skilled specialty area. Many nurses enter complex care roles serendipitously, without structured preparation or mentorship.

This 10-hour asynchronous course bundle is designed to build nurses' competence, confidence, and clinical judgment in home-based complex care. Through training in foundational principles, family-centered practice, safety and crisis response, communication, and management of multi-system conditions, participants will prepare to provide safe, effective, and compassionate care in the home setting.
