Stroke Prevention and Recognition: Protecting Your Brain and HeartJoin INTEGRIS Health Community Stroke Educator Connie Street, BSN, RN, for an engaging one-day community education program focused on stroke prevention, early recognition, and life-saving response. This course is open to healthcare staff, community members, patients, families, and anyone interested in reducing their risk of stroke and improving their ability to recognize stroke symptoms in themselves or others.Participants will learn about the relationship between heart health and stroke, understand why certain populations-including African Americans-face a higher risk for stroke and cardiovascular disease, and explore both controllable and non-controllable risk factors. Topics will include high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, atrial fibrillation, family history, age, and sleep apnea. These risk factors are highlighted in INTEGRIS stroke education materials as key contributors to stroke risk. The class will also teach the BE FASTT stroke recognition method, helping participants identify warning signs such as sudden balance problems, vision changes, facial droop, arm weakness, speech difficulties, and severe headache. Attendees will learn why immediate activation of emergency medical services (calling 911) is critical because "Time Lost is Brain Lost." Additional discussion will include:What happens during a strokeTypes of stroke and transient ischemic attacks (TIA or "warning strokes")The importance of rapid treatmentLifestyle changes that can help prevent strokeStrategies for controlling blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, and other modifiable risk factorsHow to become a stroke advocate for your family and communityEducational handouts and stroke prevention resources will be provided to support continued learning and healthy lifestyle changes after the class.
