Course Detail: PLAB-1023 - Certified Phlebotomy Technician

Phlebotomist;

Phlebotomy technicians are trained to work in hospitals, labs, and other medical facilities, often working alongside nurses and doctors in dealing with patients. A career in phlebotomy requires certification and training in how to use needles, vacuum tubes, and syringes.
Our Phlebotomy program explores the practice of phlebotomy and should provide an understanding of the role of the phlebotomist in the health care system. Upon successful completion students should be competent in performing venipuncture and dermal puncture and other methods of collecting clinical specimens.
Students must enroll concurrently in both PLAB-1023 and PLAB-1060 to complete the program and to be eligible for the certification examination. Galveston College offers this as a 144 hour State recognized Occupational Skills Award. This credential is stackable into our Patient Care Tech Program.

  • Healthcare requirements must be met prior to the first day of class.
  • Clinical hours are scheduled at various times by the instructor, and may include day, evening and/or weekends. The student is responsible for transportation to and from clinical sites.
  • Burgundy scrubs, a lab coat and student patch are available for purchase in the college's bookstore and must be worn during clinical days.
  • Upon successful completion of this course the student should be eligible to take the National Healthcare Association (NHA) Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) examination. This course includes one attempt at the CPT examination, which will be scheduled by the instructor and is non-refundable and non-transferable.
  • This program is eligible for a payment plan, and additional funding sources may be available for eligible students. The textbook, study guide, practice test are included with the tuition. Students are automatically enrolled in the UTMB student health program for the semester.
