Overview

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's English for Air Traffic Control: Handling Unusual or Emergency Situations is a self-paced, online course designed to improve air traffic controllers' English language proficiency. You will spend 12-15 hours practicing your English language skills and learning about information that is important to the job of an air traffic controller.

The course adheres to ICAO Circular 323 - Guidelines for Aviation English Training Programmes and ICAO Document 9835 - Manual on the Implementation of ICAO Language Proficiency Requirements.

This course awards 1.5 Continuing Education Units (CEU) upon completion.

By completing the course, you will receive a digital credential that represents your achievement. You can share the digital credential with others online.

What You Will Learn

Unusual or emergency situations are an unpredictable part of flight operations, but when they arise, these situations demand excellent performance from both ATCOs and the flight crew.

In this course, you will:

  • Practice the ICAO skills of Comprehension, Fluency, Vocabulary, Structure, and Pronunciation
  • Improve your listening and reading proficiency
  • Create videos to practice your speaking proficiency
  • Study a specific language point to help you speak intelligibly
  • Complete workbook guides to reflect on your learning
  • Learn important information related to the module topic
  • Present ideas, opinions, and analyses about the information in the course

The course includes a workbook, multimedia presentations, interactive activities, audio recordings, and more.

Who Should Attend?

This course is recommended for those with intermediate English language skills (ICAO Pre-Operational Level 3) who are current or future air traffic controllers or other aviation professionals interested in air traffic control or handling unusual or emergency situations.

Additional Information

This course is online, self-paced, and asynchronous. There are no scheduled meeting times with an instructor. Coursework is web-based with no additional software required. A reliable internet connection is recommended.

You will have access to the course for 3 months so that you can complete the activities at your own pace. You can complete the activities as many times as you want to keep practicing your English skills.

The developers of this course have Master's degrees in Applied  Linguistics  or  Teaching  English  as  a  Second  Language (TESOL). This course was developed in collaboration with aviation Subject Matter  Experts (SMEs).
