Course Detail: W-IND-ASE-A3-MANDR - ASE - Manual Drive Train and Axles (A3)

This course provides training in the diagnosis, service, and repair of Manual Drive Trains and Axle components. The ASE - Manual Drive Trains and Axle class will cover the knowledge and skills related to clutch, transmission, transaxle, Drive shaft, and 4-wheel Drive diagnosis and repair. Your employer will need to assist with the Hands-on Practical experience that should complement this course's theoretical portion.

Emphasis is placed on safety, proper tool usage, manufacturer service procedures, and professional automotive service standards. Upon completion, students will be prepared to pursue Manual Drive Train and Axles (A3) certification.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, participants will understand the theoretical aspects of:

  1. 1. The ability to perform and have a complex understanding of Clutch Diagnosis and Repair such as:

  • Diagnose clutch noise, binding, slippage, pulsation, chatter, pedal feel/effort, and release problems; determine needed repairs
  • Inspect, adjust and replace clutch disc and pressure plate assembly; inspect input shaft pilot and splines

  1. 2. The ability to perform Transmission Diagnosis such as:

  • Diagnose transmission noise, difficult shifting, gear clash, jumping out of gear, fluid condition and type, and fluid leakage problems; determine needed repairs.
  • Inspect, adjust, lubricate and replace transmission external shift assemblies, linkages, brackets, bushings/grommets, cables, pivots, and levers.

          3. The ability to perform Transaxle Diagnosis and Repair:
  • Diagnose transaxle noise, difficult shifting, gear clash, jumping out of gear, fluid condition and type, and fluid leakage problems; determine needed repairs.
  • Inspect, adjust, lubricate and replace transaxle external shift assemblies, linkages, brackets, bushings/grommets, cables, pivots, and levers

  1. 4. The ability to perform Drive Shaft/Half-Shaft and CV Joint Diagnosis and Repair:

  • Diagnose drive/half shaft and universal/CV joint noise and vibration problems; determine needed repairs.
  • Inspect, service, and replace shafts, slip joints, yokes, boots, and universal/CV/flexible disc joints; verify proper phasing

  1. 5. The ability to perform Drive Axles Diagnosis and Repair:

  • Comprehensive instruction about Ring and Pinion Gears
  • Comprehensive instruction about the Differential Case/Carrier Assembly
  • Comprehensive instruction about Limited Slip/Locking Differentials
  • Comprehensive instruction about Axle Shafts and Housing

  1. 6. The ability to perform Four-Wheel Drive/All-Wheel Drive Component Diagnosis and Repair:

  • Diagnose drive systems noise, vibration, leakage and steering problems; determine needed repairs.
  • Inspect, repair, replace, adjust, and calibrate transfer case manual shifting mechanisms, bushings, mounts, levers, and brackets.

Certification

This course is intended to be an Exam Preparation course. Students will leave the course prepared to take the ASE Exam as well as with a Certificate of Completion from the College of Eastern Idaho WTCE. This course is for Professional Development.

Target Audience

  • This course is intended for Automotive Technicians that want Industry backed credentials.
  • This course is intended for automotive professionals who possess practical, hands-on experience in vehicle service and repair but require a stronger foundation in theoretical knowledge to successfully complete ASE certification examinations.
  • This course is targeted to employers aiming to enhance workforce competency by providing structured training in common industry challenges.
