Course Detail: W-HC-MHE - Mental Healthcare Essentials
Mental Healthcare Essentials is an introductory course designed for beginning healthcare professionals-such as Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs)-who are interested in pursuing a career in the mental healthcare field. This course provides foundational knowledge and practical skills for supporting individuals with mental health needs. Participants will explore key topics including Mental Health First Aid, common mental health disorders, psychotropic medications and their indications, the culture and environment of treatment centers, effective de-escalation techniques, and Narcan administration.
By the end of the course, learners will be prepared to engage confidently and compassionately in mental healthcare settings.
Learning Outcomes:
- Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Recognize and respond to mental health crises using Mental Health First Aid principles.
- Identify common mental health disorders and understand their impact on patient care. Demonstrate a basic understanding of psychotropic medications and their uses.
- Navigate the culture and environment of mental healthcare facilities.
- Apply effective de-escalation techniques in challenging situations.
- Administer Narcan safely and appropriately.
