Course Detail: AVIS-150 - CASTING IN THE FOUNDRY

Learn the materials, processes and techniques used to safely produce finished cast-metal sculpture. Students create waxes through plaster mold-making and direct wax fabrication. The cost for metals and investments used during this course are in addition to the listed material fee.

$395 plus $85 material fee

Safety glasses

Todd Erickson

Biography:

Todd Erickson is a sculptor renowned for his spiritually connected artworks that draw inspiration from nature. His sculptures, which seamlessly blend unique and controlled forms with the beauty of natural elements, serve as profound responses to life's fundamental questions. Todd's artistic process involves an intimate and intuitive engagement with the outdoors, allowing reality to shape the narrative of his creations.From a young age, Todd's passion for collecting objects ignited a lifelong fascination with materials and their natural history. Starting with wood carvings, handmade fishing lures, and small-scale models, he honed his artistic skills and developed a deep respect for the inherent value of each collected item. This respect for materials and their stories is evident in his sculptures, where every individual component plays a significant role, representing specific moments in his life. By casting these materials, Todd not only preserves their physical essence but also imbues the sculptures with memories and a connection to the past.In addition to his artistic practice, Todd has devoted over three decades to teaching and mentoring art students at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. His belief in the transformative power of mentorship stems from his own experiences as a student. He attributes his artistic growth and development to the guidance and inspiration provided by his professors, notably Billy Mayer at Hope College and Michael Hall at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Todd finds great fulfillment in witnessing his students' artistic progression and their genuine interest in the historical themes that permeate his work, providing hope for the continued education and engagement of viewers and the community.

Todd Erickson's sculptures have been showcased in numerous solo and group exhibitions, receiving acclaim both nationally and internationally. His works grace esteemed public and private collections, including those of the Flint Institute of Art, Hope College, Millersville University, Wayne State University, College for Creative Studies, the Kruizenga Art Museum, and many more. Throughout his career, Todd has received various awards and commissions, acknowledging his artistic achievements and significant contributions to the field.
