Course Detail: ADRW-316 - BOTANICAL DRAWING AND PAINTING


Dive into the captivating world of botanical art with this immersive short course designed for artists and nature enthusiasts alike. This course combines traditional and contemporary approaches to botanical art, focusing on observational drawing, composition, and the use of color. Participants will work with a range of mediums, while learning how to capture the delicate textures, intricate patterns, and vibrant hues of plant life. This class will meet at CCS for the first class and at various metro Detroit gardens and parks locations for subsequent classes.

Supplies

Recommended supply list. Bring different materials that you have or desire.

Pencil sharpener - Maped is a good brand.

Pencils 

  • Pencils - 2HB is standard.  Ticonderoga brand offers good quality and has good erasers. 

  • Optional - You may want a variety of pencil grades, from very hard 6H to very soft 6B.  Make fine, light, sharp marks with "H" (hard) and softer, darker lines with "B" (black).  The higher the number, the harder or softer the graphite is.

Eraser

  • White plastic/vinyl eraser - Staedtler and Faber Castell are good brands.

  • Optional - kneaded rubber

Mixed media OR watercolor paper

  • Mixed media paper - 9 x 12 up to 11x 15. Canson, Stonehenge, or Strathmore are good brands.

  • Watercolor paper - 9 x 12 inches up to 14 x 17 inches, minimum 90 lb., (140 lb. is ideal), smooth surface (Hot Press), acid-free, cotton content. Arches or Fabriano are good brands.

Watercolor 

  • Watercolor paints - set of 12, 5 ml tubes, Windsor Newton, Schminke-Horadam, or Holbein are good brands.

  • Optional - gouache, acrylic, oil paint, illustration markers, colored pencil, watercolor pencils

Palette

  • White plate - porcelain, plastic, or enamel

Brushes

  • Soft bristle - synthetic sable set, rounds mostly, short handle.  

Other equipment for work on location

  • Bottle of water and plastic jar  

  • Paper towel

  • Masking tape

  • Ruler

  • Scissors
