This class prepares law enforcement and public safety professionals to better deal with people in a serious mental health crisis. CIT(Crisis Intervention Team) is a police-based, pre-booking jail diversion program that trains law enforcement to better understand mental illness, de-escalate people in crisis and direct them to appropriate care rather than jail. CIT programs emphasize access to treatment services rather than jail time for persons displaying signs of mental illness. Outcomes for both officers and the individuals in crisis are improved when communities work together in effective CIT programs. A partnership between law enforcement, the mental health system and consumers/families provide many benefits for the community.
