Training Information: CED-0913 - Advanced Emergency Medical Technician
The Advanced EMT (AEMT) program prepares the EMT for a successful transition to AEMT level practice through introduction and repetition of all AEMT level skills.
The student is expected to expand upon their prior knowledge to develop AEMT level foundational concepts including human anatomy and physiology, patient assessment, AEMT airway management, pharmacology and medication administration, Medical Emergencies, Trauma Emergencies, Pediatrics, Geriatrics, Special patient populations, and EMS Service Operations.
During the interactive lab-based course the student's Basic Life Support skills including splinting and bandaging, tourniquet use, CPR, AED, and oxygen therapy are confirmed. The student learns AEMT-level Medical and Trauma Assessments using simulation and scenario-based activities. All AEMT level skills are introduced during this semester: intravenous and intraosseous access, medication administration, airway management including CPAP, supraglottic airways, and 12-lead EKG acquisition.
The field experience transitions the student from the role of helper/BLS-provider to team leader. The student will begin their field and clinical time once successfully completes the assessment, airway, and pharmacology modules with an AEMT or Paramedic preceptor. Vermont State University Paramedic uniform is required for all clinical and field time.
