Participants demonstrate and practice selecting and preparing the skin puncture site; anatomy and physiology; communication skills across a broad spectrum of authoritative levels; collecting of specimens, adherence to proper health and safety guidelines; OSHA guidelines on preventing the spread of infectious diseases; patient/technician relationships; and properly keeping record of all laboratory tests. The demonstration and practice will use simulation arms and live sticks are performed once hired for employment. A participant must work one (1) year and perform over 100 live skin sticks to take the national certification exam. The national certification exam is not a requirement in Vermont.
