Training Information: CED-0884 - Shield Metal Arc - SMAW Basic

This training consists of running stringer beads and weaves on steel plates to make fillet welds in all positions using different size electrodes. It will also cover the techniques for performing full penetration groove welds in the flat position using backing.

Students will be able to:
  • Practice striking an arc and making stringer beads;
  • Accomplish beads straight, uniform to structural code for fillet welds in the flat position;
  • Accomplish stringer beads in the horizontal and vertical positions;
  • Learn to weave and accomplish this in the flat, horizontal, and vertical positions;
  • Learn the weave technique in the same positions with fillet and groove welds
Certification will be available to the structural code AWS D1.1 for fillet welds and for groove welds of limited thickness.

Jobs that require this type of training: structural steel erection; shipbuilding; pipe welders; fabricators; heavy equipment production and maintenance; bridge building; transportation and plant or shop maintenance.
