T&L 2900: Optimistic Team (Book Study)
This professional book study will focus on the principles and strategies presented in Optimistic Teaming: Coordination Strategies for Tough Student Situations by Ben Springer and Ben Belnap. The book explores how educators can build effective, optimistic teams to address challenging student behaviors and improve outcomes for students, families, and school staff.
Participants will read and discuss assigned sections of the book, reflect on their current teaming practices, and connect the concepts to real-world situations in their schools. Through collaborative discussion, case studies, self-reflection, and practical application activities, participants will examine how team dynamics, communication, problem-solving, and individual perspectives influence the way teams respond to challenging situations.
The book study will emphasize evidence-based optimism rather than simply maintaining a positive attitude. Participants will explore strategies for strengthening team relationships, improving coordination, managing difficult situations, and developing a shared approach to supporting students. Participants will also have opportunities to identify barriers to effective collaboration, consider alternative perspectives, and develop actionable strategies they can implement within their own school teams.
The goal of this learning experience is to help educators build stronger, more collaborative, and solution-focused teams that approach challenging student situations with greater confidence, consistency, and optimism. Participants will leave with practical tools and strategies to improve teamwork, support student needs, and promote positive outcomes for students and the adults who work with them.
