This graduate-level course offers an in-depth exploration of A Teacher's Guide to Standards-Based Learning by Tammy Heflebower et al., paired with practical implementation strategies for transforming classroom practices. Through a structured book study, participants will engage with the core principles of standards-based learning, including clear learning targets, effective assessment design, grading practices, and student-centered instruction.

The mission of this blended course is to facilitate professional growth in relation to cognitive engagement. Learners will engage with a variety of engagement strategies, but also reflect on their own practices to see how they can increase student cognitive engagement in their class.

This course will support teachers in their first and second years of teaching at West Fargo Public Schools. Teachers will engage in practices that support student learning and teacher knowledge. Classroom management poses many challenges for new teachers and a focus on CHAMPS will be reviewed and discussed at each class.
