The Dakota Conference provides an opportunity for over 300 healthcare professionals, educators, and students to share strategies for building and sustaining healthy communities in North Dakota. It includes two and one half days of pre-conference workshops, keynote speakers, breakout sessions, poster presentations, evening workshops, and an awards banquet.

This course covers several specialized and advanced topics in deathinvestigation. There are three major topics reviewed:

  1. Child and infant death investigations.
  2. Process and importance of identification with review of types of identification used in death investigation.
  3. Death investigation where apparent natural disease is caused by trauma and non-natural events and natural deaths which appear initially to be trauma related.

This course is structured from the NIJ Death Investigation publication, supplemented by vignettes, audio and video clips. The main standards utilized are ABMDI training metrics and the NIJ Death Investigation Standards.

The increasing ethnicity base in the United States encompasses bothtraditional groups of diversity, religious based groups and also increasing numbers of newer immigrants and their diversity issues. Lessons for cultural competency for a wide variety of ethnic, racial and religious groups will increase basic cultural competency and diversity appreciation in death investigations. Overviews of cultural basic competencies, such as burial traditions, autopsy concerns / prohibitions, timing of burial etc., will be presented. Learning will occur withcompetency and issues formulated and purposely integrated with case material in other learning units. For example, some GSW or ID lectures will involve accommodation and dealing with families with burial traditions within 24 hours, an Elder smoking ceremony, pastoral care and other scenarios, assuring that multiple re-enforcement and opportunities for cultural competency are present in thetraining.

This course will focus on Mental Health Issues for Death Investigators. The training will enable you to recognize and appropriately respond to mental health problems and crises that you are likely to encounter during the course of your work. Being trained in this area enables you to aid those in need and ultimately direct them to the appropriate mental health care treatment they require.

This course will provide an introduction to common terminology and pathophysiology of medical conditions to allow first responders and investigators at death scenes to assess potential medical contributions or complications leading to or contributing to the death.
