EVT: UND/MSUM Spring Symposium

The UND/MSUM Spring Symposium has been an annual professional event in our region since the early 1980s. This conference has an audience of medical and education speech-language pathologists in the area, as well as special education strategists. The number of attendees varies over the years, reaching 300 or more. The symposium is also offered for 1 professional development graduate credit through UND and 15 hours of continuing education through the ND State Board.

On Thursday, April 15th, Amy Zamzo, OT and Heidi Kalina, SLP will be presenting on "21st Century Learnings: Shedding Light on Lagging Skills and the Impact on Behavior." The latest research in child development shows that many children who have the brain and heart to succeed lack or lag behind in crucial "executive skills" - the fundamental habits of mind required for getting organized, staying focused, and controlling impulses and emotions. Children of the 21st century bring many challenging behaviors to the table for parents, teachers and professionals.

On Friday, April 16th, the conference attendees will choose their sessions, one for the morning and one for the afternoon. Dr. Sarah Robinson will speak on the teaching of vocabulary through her two presentations. In the morning session, the title of the presentation is "Core vocabulary: Not just for AAC devise users", followed by the afternoon session entitled "Beyond Tier II Vocabulary; Which words to teach and how."

The alternative choice for Friday morning or afternoon is to participate in a session with the staff from the Anne Carlsen Center. Their staff will be presenting and preparing their session which is entitled "Language and Literacy Make and Take with Anne Carlsen." All of the participants will be making therapy materials that are related to specific literacy selections, visual schedules, core vocabulary boards, and more.


  • Amy Zamzo is an Occupational Therapist and Autism Consultant that has spent her 20 year career empowering and guiding children, parents and other professionals. She is dedicated to providing the necessary strategies, supports, and compassion needed to help all individuals be the best possible version of themselves. Her goal is to help all her clients become happy, independent, contributing members of society.

  • Heidi Kalina is a Speech-Language Pathologist and has been in the public schools since 1998. During her career, she has provided services to children from birth to 21 years of age. She has seen the rewards of fostering independence in students with communication disorders and is excited to share these successes.

  • Dr. Sarah Robinson is a faculty member at the University of North Dakota Communication Sciences and Disorders Department. She has been a professor at the university for over 13 years. A focus of her interest and research is the acquisition of child language and literacy skills.

  • Barb Delohery, M.ED TVI ATP is a retired special education teacher. She spent 11 years teaching at the North Dakota School for the Blind and then another 22 years as part of the Special Education Unit for the Grand Forks Public School district. She was the Assistive Technology Specialist and TVI for the school district. She is currently employed by the Anne Carlsen Center as the Assistive Technology Service Coordinator.

  • Marcy Szarkowski, M.S., SES, ATP has been employed by the Anne Carlsen Center for 21 years. In her current role as Ideation Center Specialist, she serves on a team of professionals responsible for internal and external development for the organization. These activities include staff development training, client consultations, comprehensive programmatic evaluations, community-based vocational assessments and professional trainings/workshops to outside entities throughout the state of North Dakota.
