Course Detail: 38CAPITOL - 38 Tour Michigan's Capitol Building & Battle Flag Collection

Michigan's Capitol building was designed by Elijah E. Myers (1830-1909), who was virtually unknown until he won a national competition in 1871 to design Michigan's third statehouse. Today, Michigan's Capitol is nationally recognized for its extraordinary architecture and art. It stands as Michigan's most important historic building and a proud symbol of the state. Our day will begin with a guided tour of the capitol and Heritage Hall, a newly- opened wing that features history exhibits and conservation viewing space. OLLI members will have the opportunity to view the nine acres of hand-painted decorative art throughout the building, and learn stories from Michigan's past. This tour will feature the public areas of the Capitol including the Rotunda and the Gallery of the Governors; a discussion on flag conservation; and may also include access to the Senate and House Galleries, depending on availability. Following the Capitol Building tour, we'll enjoy lunch at Midtown Brewing Company in Lansing. Then, we'll head to the Michigan History Museum to view the Battle Flag Collection and learn more about the history of these artifacts and the conservation efforts used to "Save the Flags." There will be free time to explore the Michigan History Museum following the Battle Flag lecture and tour. This trip package includes tour of the Michigan Capitol Building and Battle Flag Collection and lecture, lunch at Midtown Brewery, admission to the Michigan History Museum and motor coach transportation.
