Course Detail: 46FORD - 46 Discover Ford: Edsel & Eleanor Ford House, Ford Piquette Avenue Plant and Ford's Garage

We've planned a day exploring everything Ford! Our first stop will be a tour of the Edsel and Eleanor Ford House located in Grosse Pointe Shores northeast of Detroit and stands on the site known as "Gaukler Point," on the shore of Lake St. Clair. The mansion became the new residence of the Edsel and Eleanor Ford family in 1928. If you have never toured the Edsel and Eleanor Ford Estate, you want to sign up for this trip! Our included lunch is at Ford's Garage, a restaurant that will give you the vibe of being in a 1920s service station, including vintage Ford vehicles, gas pumps and fixtures. The bars feature prohibition-style elements of old brick, rich wood and a hand-hammered copper bar top. Many more unique features, too numerous to list, really make Ford's Garage a fun place for OLLI members to visit and take pictures! Our final stop for the day will be the Ford Piquette Avenue Plant, the birthplace of the Model T. Early experiments using a moving assembly line to make the cars were also conducted in this plant. It was also the first factory to assemble more than 100 cars in one day. While it was headquartered at the Piquette Avenue Plant, Ford Motor Company became the biggest U.S.-based automaker, and it would remain so until the mid-1920s. Trip package includes Edsel and Eleanor Ford House tour, Ford Piquette Avenue Plant tour, lunch at Ford's Garage and motorcoach transportation from SVSU.
