Course Detail: 43JACKSON - 43 Discover Jackson: Prisons, Parishes & Paint

Tour Michigan's first prison and hear the history of prisons and prisoners in Michigan. You'll go back in time to 1837, when Michigan became the 26th state in the Union and needed a prison. Our guide will share the fascinating history of the prison and stories of infamous inmates, consuming corruption, devastating riots and prison reforms that mark the history of these prisons. After visiting the prison, we'll have lunch at Bella Notte, a popular Italian Restaurant in Jackson. Following lunch, our step-on guide will board our motorcoach for a guided tour of historic Jackson, including murals, churches and railroad stations. Before heading home, we will explore the Lost Rail Museum in Grass Lake and take a virtual ride on Car 29, part of the Interurban Railway and way of travel in the early 1900s. Trip package includes prison tour, lunch at Bella Notte, a guided tour of Jackson, the Lost Rail Museum in Grass Lake and motorcoach transportation from SVSU. You will need to sign a release to enter these venues as required by the Department of Corrections. Cell phones, cameras, tobacco, drugs, and weapons are prohibited at Cell Block 7. Due to the nature of this trip, it is not recommended for those with mobility issues.
