Visit a beautiful Culver stone Gothic Revival-style chapel and nearby family cemetery. Hear from Gillette Ransom, a descendant of the famous farmer and cattle rancher John Dean Gillett (1819-1888). The Gillett family, with the help of family friend and attorney Abraham Lincoln, developed Elkhart into a cattle shipping point to the world on the Chicago & Alton Railroad. Daughter Emma Gillett married Richard J. Oglesby, a Civil war hero and three-term governor of Illinois.Where: St. John the Baptist Chapel and Elkhart Cemetery, Logan County Road 10/Kennedy Road, Elkhart. Parking available.
