Course Detail: CEW-3016 - Acrylic Painting Essentials

Discover the versatility and accessibility of acrylic paint in this engaging, hands-on course. Known for its affordability and adaptability, acrylic allows artists to blend, layer, sculpt, and build rich textures with ease. In this class you'll explore the core principles of light, color, shape, and value while developing your own creative voice. We'll begin by working from life to strengthen observation and technique, then transition into more expressive and abstract projects that emphasize texture, layering, and the use of tools such as palette knives and specialty mediums. Whether you're brand new to painting or returning after time away, this course will provide the foundational skills and confidence you need to create with acrylics.

A supply fee of $34 is due to the instructor on the first day of class which covers a large canvas, gesso, paint palette, modeling paste and mixing medium.

Students should bring the following supplies with them to class: 8" by 8" canvas panels or 9" by 12" canvas paper pads, brushes/palette knives (recommended: Super Value 50 Piece Brush Set by Artist's Loft? Necessities?), mixing mediums (matte, satin, or gloss mixing medium), paint (student-grade acrylic colors including titanium white, mars black, cadmium yellow, cadmium red, and ultramarine blue with optional additional colors being burnt sienna, burnt umber, dioxazine purple, and any of the phthalo colors), water container for cleaning brushes, a towel or rag for wiping brushes, textured items (this can be a textured spatula, bubble wrap, stamps, or any other textured tool or object that is okay to get some paint on), and reference objects/images (safe, inoffensive objects in to create still life compositions or source material from their personal photos/internet references to inspire their work including style inspiration).
