Course Detail: SGA-1005 - Applied Economics in Aviation

Overview

This course is a "Core course" that is part of the Graduate Certificate in Aviation. This in-person (2.5-days) or online (20-hours)course in Advanced Aviation Economics is specifically created for aviation industry professionals to further develop their analytical and critical thinking skills to apply fundamental concepts of economics to the global airline industry, with a particular emphasis on the Asia-Pacific Region.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, students should understand the nature of air transportation demand and airline supply, the economic foundation for airline pricing and the complex methodology for managing passenger and freight fares, airline costs and methods of control, and fleet management. Economic theory will be applied to current and future predicted challenges in aviation within the context of Asia. Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:
  • Describe the role of economic analysis and its application within strategic and tactical management of the global airline industry
  • Assess the potential for regional air transportation growth given the nature of air travel demand including the application of factors that drive demand
  • Describe airline cost structure, the nature of fixed, variable, and controllable costs, and methods of control employed by network and low-fare carriers, and demonstrate the application of airline costs to fleet selection
  • Explain the major segments of passenger and cargo demand classify by price elasticity of demand
  • Contrast the various product and route structure alternatives, including the costs and benefits of each, and means for achieving product differentiation, and describe and give examples of various passenger and cargo business models
  • Compare and contrast competing airline products and assess potential for meeting targeted customer segments and profitability
  • Describe the economic market types and contrast the pricing and output decisions of firms
  • Explain the theory of price discrimination and its application to revenue management in the airline and other industries
  • Discuss the regulatory history of international air transportation and the evolution toward liberalization and competitive markets, and assess the effects of liberalization on air transport growth, product development and pricing
  • Compare and contrast the economics of the global air cargo market with passenger service

Course Delivery

The course is delivered over one month in a flexible virtual format, combining live instruction with self-paced coursework.

  • EagleVision (powered by Zoom): Our virtual classroom technology for live, interactive sessions. Engage directly with professors and classmates in real-time during scheduled lectures. All live sessions are recorded and made available to participants in the event that a session is missed.
  • Canvas: A modern, cloud-based learning platform accessible from any device. Access course materials, submit assignments, and collaborate on discussion boards at your own pace.

Online EagleVision sessions are held on four Saturdays over the course of one month, with each session meeting for five hours. Sessions are supported by asynchronous Canvas activities between classes. Upcoming course dates and times are listed in the Session Information section below. Class times may be adjusted based on the regions from which participants are joining to accommodate different time zones. 

This course may be completed independently or combined with other eligible courses to fulfill the requirements of the Graduate Certificate in Aviation (GCA).

The Graduate Certificate in Aviation (GCA) is designed for aviation professionals seeking to strengthen their knowledge and management capabilities within the global aviation industry, with particular emphasis on the Asia and Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions.

Designed for professionals across airports, airlines, air navigation service providers, aircraft management, banking and finance, and other aviation-related sectors, the program develops practical knowledge and skills for managing aviation organizations and applying fundamental business and operational concepts within a global industry.

Registration and Course Fees:
Full payment is required at the time of registration to secure your seat in an ERAU Professional Education & Training course.

Changes to Your Enrollment:
We understand that plans can change! If you need to withdraw from a course, you'll receive a full refund (100%) as long as you notify us at least ten (10) working days before the start of the course. Requests to withdraw made after this deadline are not eligible for any refund; however, a one-time transfer to the next session may be possible. Requests to withdraw should be sent by 
email.

Class Cancellations:
In the rare case that a course has low enrollment and needs to be canceled, we'll do our best to let you know as soon as possible. If this happens, you'll receive a full refund (100%) or can transfer to the next session or similar course.
