Course Detail: SSEC - System Safety Engineering & Certification
Overview
Participants will gain theoretical and practical knowledge and understanding of safety engineering addressing requirements capture, design, development, test, and operation and maintenance of aerospace hardware and software safety-critical components and systems. The course also provides an overview of the regulatory framework for airborne safety-critical systems, including the aircraft initial airworthiness certification ecosystem.
The course presents the concepts of safety-critical system development assurance and certification, including hazard and safety risk assessment at different stages of development, reliability models, fault models and failure modes and analysis, and a brief introduction to formal methods for safety assessment. Use of mathematical and logical models is oriented toward providing the tools needed in the initial airworthiness assurance process. Applicable industry standards (SAE ARP 4754A, SAE ARP 4761, RTCA DO-178C, RTCA DO-297, RTCA DO-333, and RTCA DO-254) are also discussed.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of the course, the participants shall be able to:
- Understand the regulatory framework for airborne safety-critical systems and the initial airworthiness certification ecosystem.
- Describe the concepts of safety engineering for airborne systems and safety-critical system development assurance.
- Characterize aircraft safety engineering process timeframe on the systems engineering development 'V' diagram.
- Become familiar with and apply basic techniques of hazard and safety assessment and categorize the safety risk.
- Identify the causes of hardware and software failures leading to system safety violations through applying diverse failure analyses techniques.
- Familiarize with the formal methods concept and its role in certification and verification of airborne software controlling safety-critical systems.

Systems, safety, software/hardware, and aerospace engineers and managers engaged in development of systems for aviation and related industries that may require formal certification. This course is tailored toward individuals actively involved in their organization's development of safety-critical systems.
Certificate of Completion
The participants attending all three days will be awarded a certificate attesting that they successfully completed the course requirements in "System Safety Engineering and Certification" and will be awarded 1.8 Continuing Education Units (CEU's).
