Course Description: Short Stories & Flash Fiction

In this class, learn the basic elements of short story and flash fiction writing with award-winning author and college educator, Kat Mattingly. As part of the class, you will have a chance to practice skills for developing plot, character, setting, voice, and dialogue while writing short fiction pieces. Kat will also discuss avenues for publishing your short stories and flash fiction, whether written in this class or otherwise. Kat has a short story collection with Winter Goose Publishing entitled Fractured Hearts, which includes five of her award-winning stories. Open to writers of all genres and levels!

Kathryn Mattingly

Biography: Kat has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Oregon and a Master of Arts from Pacific University in Forest Grove. She has studied under best-selling authors: Terry Brooks, Elizabeth George, Dorothy Allison, John Saul, and Gail Tsukiyama. Kat has penned 5 literary suspense novels: Benjamin, Journey, Olivia's Ghost, The Tutor & Katya. Her debut novel, Benjamin, won an award as a manuscript and landed her a NY agent with JCA Literary Agency. In addition to her novels, Kat has a short story collection entitled Fractured Hearts which includes 4 writing contest winning stories. Kat's work can be found in numerous themed anthologies including Writer's Digest Award Winning Stories, and Internationally Yours: Prize Winning Stories. Her short fiction appears in the print magazines: Dark Discoveries, Leading Possibilities, and Regenerate. Kat is also published in nonfiction with over 30 feature articles for Possibility Media Group. She was a Senior Editor with Possibility Publishing (a division of PMG) before opening her own editorial service (penpublishpromote). While in Sacramento, CA., Kat was a Department Chair for a private arts college where she taught Literature in Film and Essay Writing. She has also taught Creative and Academic Writing on the University of Phoenix campus. Kat has over 10 years' experience teaching writing at the college level and has been a reader/judge for several annual literary contests across the country.

Full refunds are also issued for classes cancelled by COCC.
