Field Notes: Connecting to Nature Through Art Youth Camp

Using graphite, pen and ink, and watercolor, students will develop foundational drawing skills while learning to document their discoveries in personal field journals. They'll combine images, words, and numbers to communicate their experiences and deepen their understanding of the world around them. Indoor sessions focus on developing artistic technique, while outdoor field trips immerse students in the landscapes of Central Oregon, fostering careful observation and thoughtful reflection.
Guided by themes of stewardship, scientific thinking, and creative expression, this camp welcomes all skill levels. Led by COCC Fine Art Instructor James Adams-whose professional life blends art, science, and the outdoors-participants will gain confidence and insight through engaging, supportive instruction. Journals and art supplies are provided. Field trip details will be shared prior to the start of camp. All drivers are COCC-authorized to operate college vehicles. Ages 10-15. Nature Journaling: Seeing, Thinking, and Connecting Through Art
This five-week class welcomes students of all ability levels who want to develop a deeper connection with the natural world through drawing, writing, and observation. Nature journaling is more than making art-it is a way of seeing, thinking, and engaging with the environment through careful attention and curiosity. Using a combination of sketching, ink, watercolor, and annotation, participants will learn to document their observations, ask meaningful questions, and explore connections between art, science, and personal experience.
