Course Description: Field Notes: Connecting to Nature Through Art Youth Camp

Art surrounds us. In this hands-on nature journaling camp where science, art, and curiosity come together. Campers will explore the natural world through sketching, writing, and focused observation-both in the classroom and out in the field - over the course of three weeks on Mondays and Wednesdays.
Using graphite, pen and ink, and watercolor, students will develop foundational drawing skills while learning to document their discoveries in personal field journals. They'll combine images, words, and numbers to communicate their experiences and deepen their understanding of the world around them. Indoor sessions focus on developing artistic technique, while outdoor field trips immerse students in the landscapes of Central Oregon, fostering careful observation and thoughtful reflection.
Guided by themes of stewardship, scientific thinking, and creative expression, this camp welcomes all skill levels. Led by COCC Fine Art Instructor James Adams-whose professional life blends art, science, and the outdoors-participants will gain confidence and insight through engaging, supportive instruction. Journals and art supplies are provided. Field trip details will be shared prior to the start of camp. All drivers are COCC-authorized to operate college vehicles. Ages 10-15.
