Course Description: The Great American Novel: Moby Dick

Moby Dick is a candidate for the "Great American Novel." On its surface, it is about an obsessed man's quest for revenge against the white whale that wrecked his previous ship and severed his leg, but it contains great depths of ideas. In this course, students will probe into deeper issues such as morality, questing, perception, racial differences, whaling, among others. The novel will be the guide that provides insight into many aspects of nineteenth-century cultural themes. Students will provide their own copy of the book.
