Course Detail: CE.ENR-077 - Solo Jazz Guitar
Solo Jazz Guitar-The objective of this course is to help intermediate and advanced students to play and create solo chord/melody arrangements for the guitar. It is not for beginners. Knowledge of the entire fingerboard of the guitar is welcome but will be attained upon completion of the course. If a student has a knowledge of the first few positions that would be good as a starting point. By learning 3 octave scales and arpeggios the student will master the whole fingerboard. Also the study of chords in 4 part harmony will contribute to the above stated goal. Chords will be presented with their various positions-root, 1st, 2nd and 3rd inversions. Chord families-the grouping of specific sets of strings like 1234, 2345 and 3456 will be studied. The arrangements will not just involve block chords but will include the usage of single note passages based on scales and arpeggios to form a collective link to create a florid, pianistic realization of the chord/melody arrangements. Understanding intervals-like Perfect Fourth, Major Second etc. will be discussed also to understand why a Major Seventh chord differs in sound and application from a Minor Seventh chord etc. This approach will help students of solo jazz guitar to become proficient and ultimately able to create to create their own arrangements in the jazz idiom.
