Course provides an overview of payroll coding and the effect on state funding. A review of the accounting manual with focus on the coding component for personnel, monitoring the personnel budget, and monthly edit checks. Course will also review the reports and controls in the payroll software to streamline the process. Session will also include teacher certification and in-depth review of the LEAPS reporting for school districts Session will cover all aspects of the reporting requirements and the conversion to funding allocations for the local district through the foundation program, including the importance of proper coding, certification and experience reporting.

The University of Alabama is pleased to partner with the College Board to offer the Advanced Placement (AP) Institute for current AP teachers who are looking to strengthen their program or teachers who are new to the AP program seeking guidance on curriculum and teaching methods.

This course is designed for all users of the NextGen financial software. The session will cover all basic information for both new and experienced users. Session will include general use of the financial application within the Nextgen Software. Subjects will include General Ledger, Accounts Payable, Payroll, General Reporting, and Financial Reporting within the application. Course will also review the enhancements and reporting capabilities in the software.

This session provides an in-depth overview of what payroll/personnel employees should know about employer benefits program for Alabama school districts. Topics include TRS, PEEHIP, deferred compensation plans, Section125 programs and other benefit programs. This course will also cover the tax reporting requirements of a school district to include the 941's, W-2's, tax deposit requirements, business expense accounting, and other paperwork related to payroll.

This session will review the Governmental Accounting & Financial Reporting Principles, Basic Governmental Financial Statements, State and Local Government Standards and Business Standards.

Financial reporting is the communication of information regarding an educational entity's accounting activities. This course will focus on the reporting activities including, but not limited to, presentation of the government's annual financial statements and related reports, financial information submitted to state and federal regulatory and granting agencies, budget to actual comparison reports, management reporting, and other financial reports for internal and external use.

Effective cash management is more important today than ever before. This session will develop specifications for the selection of banking and other financial services, discuss the concepts of compensating balances, cash flow analysis, account analysis statements and investment guidelines. Session will focus on effective cash management practices and the utilization of banking products and services for a more efficient business operations.

This course will provide an overview of the local taxes applicable to school districts. This session will also include a section on debt financing for Alabama school districts. Discussion will include the legal and practical issues related to debt issuance, general borrowing options available to school districts, and the procedure process for borrowing.

An in-depth review of the federal and state leave laws for education employees. Topics to include sick leave, personal leave, catastrophic, and military leave. Review of the requirements under the Family Medical Leave Act and discussion of other types of extended leaves

This session will provide an overview of the state and federal employment laws as they apply to Local Education Agencies (LEAs). Discussion will focus on the legal issues relevant to employment of school district personnel. Topics will include the Alabama tenure law (Student's First Act), the employment process to include E-Verify, vacancies and job postings. This session will also discuss the federal employment laws applicable to school districts.

A lot of what the School Business Official (SBO) does involves making ethical decisions and they must be trustworthy financial stewards of a school district's resources. Their ethical leadership helps set the tone for the entire organization. In this session participants will learn how to identify and resolve ethical challenges many professionals are often not prepared to handle and will also gain greater insight on how to empower those around them to lead with ethics and integrity.

Public purchasing and the expenditure of public funds require that ethical standards be incorporated into every aspect of the school district's purchasing function. This course will focus on vendor/contractor relationships and the code of ethics for the school district combining educational and business ethics. Topics will include a definition of business ethics, sources of ethical values, ethical standards in procurement, Alabama Ethics Law, ethical guidelines for decision makings, and how to cope with unethical situations.

Course will focus on school facility management and operations. Effective school facility management protects the capital investments and provides an enhanced learning environment for students and teachers. Topics will include planning, budgeting and purchasing for facility management, environmental issues, the capital planning process and standards and procedures of the Alabama Division of Construction Management.

Financial management is essential for all areas of school business including those with or without an accounting background. Now more than ever, school business officials must synchronize the actions of business units and the goals of the school district so that the educational resources are expended in the most efficient manner possible, especially in the classroom. This session will address financial management techniques for developing long range plans and making management decisions based on school district data, plans and goals.

This two-part session will focus on the school budget monitoring process. Subjects include financial forecasting and projections, budget amendments, budget analysis techniques and sample reports being utilized for budget performance analysis.

This course may be taken by AASBO Professional Certficate holders as part of their yearly continuing education requirement. This program for school business officials is designed to review a comprehensive set of topics. These include strategic planning, reporting, and other current issues.

This session will include an in-depth review of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Review of the regulations regarding exempt employees, overtime issues, dual employment and other wage and hour issues related to school boards.

This course provides an overview of governmental accounting and financial reporting for local school districts. This session will review the specialized accounting rules, guidelines and practices applicable to local school districts.

This session will provide an overview of the Public Works Law and the requirements and procedures for contract administration for public works projects for school districts.

When procuring and contracting for goods and services, school districts must follow various state laws and federal regulations that govern procurement, contracting, and bidding in the public sector. This session will cover the legal aspects and basics of performing the purchasing and procurement functions and general accepted practices and procedures in the purchasing process.

The two-part session will focus on processing and bids and contracts. The session will cover various legal issues that affect purchasing including bid, performance and payment bonds, contractor insurance coverage to mitigate risk, school safety requirements for contractors. Learn about the competitive bid process including determining the solicitation method need, writing the solicitation document, advertising or contacting vendors to request quotes, bids, or proposals, evaluating the quotes, bids, proposals and awarding/ negotiating the contract.

The two-part session will focus on developing, processing and management of bids and procurement contracts. Part I will focus on how bids/RFP should be written and processed to minimize mistakes and bidder protest. It will include the competitive bid process solicitation methods, writing the solicitation methods, writing the solicitation document, advertising, evaluating, and awarding/negotiating the bid.

This session will provide an overview of state education law as it applies to Local Education Agencies (LEAs). Course will provide a foundation of the laws that affect the school business operations of school districts. Session will provide an overview of Title 16, Alabama Ethics Law, and the Alabama State Board of Education Administrative Code.

This session addresses the issues of school funding for school districts in Alabama. Course will include state and federal funding allocation formulas, fiscal accountability law, financial reporting and the Alabama school accounting manual.
