Course Detail: WTPL630 - Lineworker 4

This 90-hour course meets 4 days a week for 10 hours over two- weeks. As a result of this training students will be able to demonstrate hot stick safety practices including safe working distances, and minimum approach/clearance, and explain the use of the basic types of hot sticks and hot stick accessories used for transmission line maintenance; demonstrate the basic safety principles and methodologies of the "Bare-Hand Method"; explain substations and switchyards' basic function, purpose, and common equipment, then describe the safety hazards commonly encountered in substations and switchyards; identify tree cuts used for clearing trees and tree limbs from power lines and the safety hazards associated with tree trimming work then describe ways to avoid them; list the basic steps of troubleshooting overhead line problems and describe how these steps can be used to identify and correct both simple and complex problems; describe how to prepare for emergency situations and how problems are prioritized, and the safety considerations that must be followed during emergencies. Schedule: This hybrid course is the 4th and final Lineworker course, and the 8th and final course in the Lineworker Pre-Apprenticeship Program. Online Canvas coursework will be available from 5/6/24-5/26/2024, with in-person labs from 05/13/2024 to 05/23/2024 in the Miller Electrical Training Pole Yard promptly at 7am for safety tailboard, and ends at 5:30PM. Classes will be Monday-Thursday the first week then Monday through Friday after that due to the end of Transformers. Classes may meet in Miller MCPC120A if weather prevents lab work. Graduation ceremonies and skills competition will be held in the Miller Pole Yard on Friday 05/24/2024.

Bulletin

**This is a hybrid class that includes online course content in Canvas and in-person labs. This is the 8th and final course in the Lineworker Pre-Apprenticeship Program. **Labs are held in the Miller Electrical Sector Training Pole Yard or in Miller Campus MCPC room 120A if weather prohibits lab work. **Students should plan to arrive promptly with their tools available and be ready for the safety tailboard meeting promptly at 7am.** Online Canvas Coursework will be available from a week before the course starts until the Sunday after Graduation (5/6-5/26/2024) ** Please watch Canvas and pay attention to communication from Instructors regarding practical lab opportunities with our utility partners that may change lab location.
